WHAT DETERMINES MY GRADE IN ANY COURSE?

Basically, your grades in any philosophy course is over 100; and, there are three things that make up for your grades in any philosophy course (miss any and you are saying you love to fail this course). These are;

·       Assignment- this accounts for 20 marks.
Assignment and test both make up what is known as continuous assessment. A lecturer might decide to give two assignments or four instead. In this case, each assignment would score an overall of 10 marks or 5 marks respectively. The reason for giving more assignments is to help students make more marks. For example, it is very difficult for most students to score 15/20 in an assignment, but it is possible to score 8/10. So, if one can achieve this in two assignments then, that is an overall score of 16/20 which is very healthy for one's good grades.

·       Test- this accounts for 20 marks.
The same analysis for assignment applies to test which accounts for 20 marks overall. In some rare cases, the lecturer might decide not to give any assignment (e.g. logic courses). When this is the case, test becomes 40 marks overall. But, a few cases have been experienced when assignment was 40 marks as no test was given.

·       Exam- this accounts for 60 marks.
In most examinations, you are given three questions to answer and each question carries 20 marks. It is quite difficult to score above 15 marks in each question, but any student that applies what I will advice later on, will stand a very good chance of getting 15 marks in each question. This will amount to 45 marks overall which is very healthy for ones good grades.

  Lastly, it is important you know that some lecturers give 10 marks automatically for attendance. This is to compensate those students whom are always present in class for lectures. In order words, they take attendance very seriously. Students whom form a habit of not coming for lectures would miss this 10 marks and it would tell on their overall grade. In fact, lecturers who give this 10 marks would not (most of the time) tell the students; they would simply take their attendance and do justice to those absentees. So, be PUNCTUAL for lectures. Whenever a lecturer would award this 10 marks for attendance, it simply means that test marks becomes over 15 and assignment marks also over 15.
