WHAT IS ''G.P.A'' and ''C.G.P.A''?
G.P.A (popularly known as G.P.) is the total score representing the general academic standing of a student in a semester.
C.G.P.A (popularly known as overall G.P.) is the total score representing the general academic standing of a student in at least one session/year (i.e. 2 semesters). In other words, one cannot start calculating his/her C.G.P.A. until after the second semester of a session/year. Simply put, a C.G.P.A. is the average of all the G.Ps in every semester until one graduate. At the end of one’s four session course, it is what ones C.G.P.A. is reading that determines the class of grade one would be awarded. But, the good thing is that one can monitor one's C.G.P.A. right from the first session (I would show you how to do this); so, one would automatically know the class of grade he/she is to graduate with.
G.P.A. means ''grade point average'' while C.G.P.A. means ''cumulative grade point average''. They both range from 5.0 to 1.0. The possible class of grades which one could possess based on ones G.P.A/C.G.P.A is given below;
• First class- (4.50 to 5.00)
• Second class upper- (3.50 to 4.49)
• Second class lower- (2.40 to 3.49)
• Third class- (1.50 to 2.39)
• Pass- (1.0 to 1.49)
• Fail- (don't ask me)
Any student whose G.P.A is below 1.0 (fail) for the first semester of 100 level will be placed on ‘probation’. This means ‘hey! Make sure this never repeats itself again, or else we would show you the door’. Also, any student whose semester G.P.A. is below 1.0 (fail) for two consecutive semesters of 100 level (especially) will be asked to withdraw from the course. This means ‘hey! You messed up again; get out of the university and re-take JAMB or diploma and try your luck next time’.
